I’m really not judging you!
I promise!
But, I cannot turn off my interior designer’s brain.
It’s just in me.
That’s why I went to school for interior design, right?
But, you didn’t. (Hence the no judgment)
So there are things in your house that I, as an interior designer, do notice, good and bad, the minute I walk into your house.
Yes, everybody’s taste is different, but the fundamentals of good interior design remain the same.

1. First of all, I’m usually rearranging your furniture and accessories in my head.
It just happens.
And, if your furniture is under arrest (all up against the wall) I’m definitely noticing.
I really just want to move that vase that’s on the shelf 4” to the left.
But, I’ll control myself so that I don’t hurt your feelings. ☺
I’ll only offer suggestions if asked.

2. I also always notice whether you have anything personal that tells me who you are.
You need to have personalized accessories, like framed photos or mementos from your favorite vacation place.
It is your home, right?
It’s not a hotel or a furniture showroom.
Personalize your space.
But, do it sparingly and thoughtfully.
Keep it clean, but add personality.

3. I notice how many pillows you have on your sofa.
1 or 2 pillows propped against one arm of your sofa are not enough.
The ones that come with the sofa are not enough, and they’re boring.
Have some fun!
Add a few colorful, soft, whimsical throw pillows to your sofa.
They’re fun. They add color. They add comfort. They add interest. They’re practical.
They’re an inexpensive way to add personality to your living room.

4. I notice the length of your draperies.
This one actually makes me nuts. Sorry.
Draperies should just skim the floor, not puddle, not be high waters. And they should definitely go to the floor.
That’s all.

5. Lastly, I’m always aware of the feel.
Does it feel comfortable?
Does it feel formal?
Does it have a party vibe?
Does it feel calm and tranquil?
Does it feel bright and lively?

Again, I’m truly not judging you.
You probably love your home.
And, it’s just that, YOUR home.
So, unless you ask me, I’ll never say any of these things out loud.
Cross my heart.

  1. I appreciate that you point out that draperies should go to the floor. My wife and I have been talking about changing things up at our house. I’ll have to mention this to her so that the room looks good.
