Lyn here, taking my swing at the blog. Entertaining is one of my passions. I love it all from the flowers to the cooking. This month I thought I’d share with you how you can easily be an entertaining whiz.

It’s that time of year…….Spring celebrations! Take your pick of graduations, showers, weddings, Mothers and Fathers Day! Many people are intimidated by the thought of entertaining but I love to host and while I’ve not perfected it by any means, I use the same basic plan for most occasions. You can do lots of it ahead of time which is key for stress-free entertaining AND saving time. So, if you’re getting ready for a Mother’s Day brunch, I’ve got you covered! It’s easy to throw together, especially if it’s a buffet. You can make it beautiful, festive and delicious, very simply! Here’s how:

First up, the buffet table – this can be your dining table, a folding table or your island countertop. In New England, we’re eager to get outside at this time of year, so if your gathering is outside, make sure to set up your table in the shade.

You’ll need a tablecloth if using a table. White cotton or linen are staples and go with every decor and theme. They are also easy to clean!

Next, a centerpiece is a must and will elevate the table. You can give the florist your favorite container to fill or make your own arrangement. It’s always nice to showcase what’s in season, so consider using what’s right outside your door.

Here in Western Massachusetts, we are lucky to have so many spring options like forsythia, lilacs, andromeda, dogwood or magnolia branches to make a statement. Even some bud vases down the center of the table make an impact.

Place your dishes on one end of the table for easy access. You can use either real or sturdy white disposable ones. Add your utensils wrapped in napkins (regular or sturdy paper) and put in a basket or container. Include salt/pepper and any condiments. Group those together in another basket or on a
pretty dish. Use your favorite things!

Whether you have the food catered, make it yourself or use a mixture of both, keep it simple but bountiful! Some brunch ideas are bagels and cream cheese, fruit, egg and/or potato casserole, muffins or coffee cake. Use baskets, cake plates, trays and footed dishes to put things at different heights to give your table interest. Don’t forget the serving spoons.

If you don’t have a dedicated bar, set up a simple drinks table. Use another tablecloth, include pretty paper straws, cocktail napkins, glass or clear paper cups and an ice bucket. You could include coffee and tea too! Use pretty trays or platters you have to group items like glasses and coffee cups. Consider a mimosa or bloody mary bar to keep it simple; or even just one signature cocktail (or mocktail) in a drink dispenser. Don’t forget the soft drinks and a little bowl of lemon and lime wedges.

Don’t forget the background music, I love some soft jazz! I’m sure Wendy would choose some country music.

Most importantly, have fun and enjoy your guests!
