Why You Should Never Hire an Interior Designer…

And Other Snobby Misconceptions

I was sitting at the airport with 3 hours to kill and I started talking to this woman next to me.
She asked what I do, as you do when you start talking to someone.
When I said I was an interior designer she said “Oh! I’d never hire a designer!”
After I got over my initial shock, I asked her why.
She proceeded to tell me about a friend of hers that hired a designer. The friend is snooty, according to her. And the designer she hired was “upitty” too, also according to her. She went on and on about how her friend was so materialistic and only wanted expensive things to show off and how the designer pushed her into her style and on and on and on.
I don’t have any idea who these people are but WOAH, that’s really the opposite of my thoughts on interior design! And that really irks me, these designers who continue to behave just like the designer stereotype – snotty, pushy and selling only super expensive design.
Nowadays that’s not how people live, nor how they decorate their homes.
I’ve had clients that are millionaires and clients that are living paycheck to paycheck.
And they had similarities in how they wanted to decorate their homes.
Both wanted a home that they could be proud of.
Both wanted to entertain family and friends comfortably in their home.
Both wanted a home that functioned for how their family lived.
Both wanted items that weren’t super expensive, like accessories from HomeGoods, mixed with nicer items.
Both needed help finding furnishings and accessories that worked for all of those needs.
Both didn’t have the time or knowledge to complete the task on their own.
Both wanted to save time and money by hiring an interior designer.
You see, hiring an interior is not about being materialistic.
It’s not about being showy or snotty or uppity.
It’s not about the designer pushing you into a certain style.
It’s not about spending millions.
At least it’s not for me.
That’s not how I roll.
I really believe that everyone should work with an interior designer.
It’s about finding YOUR style.
It’s about making your home work for YOU and your family.
It’s about working with YOUR budget.
And it’s about having some FUN creating a space you’ll make memories in!
That’s my rant for today. ??
