Let’s talk about what it’s like to work with an interior designer and purchasing through an interior designer versus purchasing online. What do you think I have to say about that? Yes, I’m an interior designer, so obviously I want you to purchase through me, but there’s a reason for that! My job as an interior designer and decorator is to not only create beautiful spaces, but to also save you time, money and aggravation. Did you know that interior designers can save you time, money and frustration? It’s true!

I just recently had a conversation with a client in Wilbraham, Massachusetts, and I was pointing out the benefits of purchasing through an interior designer and the downfalls of purchasing through online stores like Wayfair and Overstock. And there are many!
If you purchase through Wayfair or Overstock, you, as the consumer, go online and choose what you think might work. Cross your fingers that it’ll be the right option for your home. You order it, track it and then you are home waiting around for the delivery. They drop a big box off on your front porch and then you have to drag it into the house, unbox it and unwrap it all.

You may have to grab some tools from the garage, put it all together (praying that all the parts are there), put it in the right spot and then you have to deal with all of the packaging. You may have a product that, often times, is damaged in some way, or the screw holes don’t line up when you put it together, or it’s not quite the color you thought. Then you need to go back and call the online store, wait on hold and deal with the whole return process. In some cases, you may have to pay for the return shipping, or a restocking fee. So it’s quite a process!
Yes, you probably saved a few hundred dollars by ordering it through them, however, it may not be the same quality as ordering through me or any other interior designer.

Maybe you don’t have the time to do all of that, or don’t want to deal with the hassle. You could be frustrated with trying to furnish your home, or don’t know where to start or what to buy. That’s where I come in.

Here’s the process when you order through an interior designer. We come to you and get to know you and your home and how you live in it, what you like, what you need, etc. Then we, the interior designer, come up with a plan that is personalized for YOU and we come back to you and show you the perfect item for your space.
We source from dependable, quality companies that we’ve worked with for years, at the price point you specify. You sign off on it and you pay for that product.
That’s it! That’s all you have to do, because we then go and order it. We’ve already measured and know that it will fit.

We order it. We do all of the tracking. We do all of the delivery scheduling, and then we’re there on delivery day. When the delivery comes, the professionals pull up with the item. They’ve already inspected it, so they know it’s not damaged and they know it’s the right color. They unbox it or unwrap it and bring it into your home. They put it exactly where I say it goes, and then they take all of the packaging away. They will even go so far as to put the felt pads or little protective sliders on the bottoms of chairs or little bumpers where you may need them. They do all of that!

So, let me ask you this- do you think it’s worth saving that couple hundred bucks? I don’t know, it’s up to you, it’s your money and time, so you get to make the decision. But I want you to make an educated decision. Keep in mind the time it takes, because it may be precious time you could be doing something else!

There you have it! That’s the difference between ordering online and ordering through a designer. I will tell you that the client that I just met with said just that- “I don’t think it’s worth saving that money!” I thought I’d let you make that decision as well. Sit back. Relax. We’ve got this!

  1. This is an important post! The high level of customer service and attention to detail that designers provide when purchasing furnishings is truly unparalleled. It makes such a difference in everything being absolutely perfect.

  2. Excellent post. Most folks have no idea what they are really getting when they work with a designer and it is great for them to understand the value compared to saving a few bucks looking for the cheapest price for items online.

    1. Thank you Janet! I just had a client that wanted to save money on chairs. It took hours to put them together because the holes weren’t drilled properly. Ugh

  3. This is a really informative post, Wendy. You’ve spelled out the benefits of purchasing through a designer vs. purchasing online, so clearly. It really would never be worth the little bit of savings I might get to purchase anything major – online.

I don’t want the hassle, and don’t have the time..and the thought of dealing with all of the packaging ..up and down stairs…by myself..makes my head spin.
