Buying furniture can be overwhelming. There are hundreds of stores to shop at (especially here in New England). You have big box stores, high end brands, and custom furniture with tons of variety in styles, colors, materials and prices. AND with furniture, the most expensive items aren’t necessarily the best. There are some furniture pieces that you can save on so that you can maximize your overall home investment and spend more on the pieces that need higher quality.

Maximize your home investment with furniture you can save money on

Not all furniture is built the same and you won’t use all furniture in the same ways. That’s one of the reasons prices vary so drastically. One of the things we like to say here at Details is that it’s what’s on the inside that counts! For real! SO, here are 5 things to think about while you are looking for new furniture for your home!

1. How long do you want to have it?
Do you want it to last for 25 years? Or do you only need it for a few years until the kids are grown and you’re willing to invest. Another thing to think about when buying furniture is the style of the item. Is it a super trendy piece that you love right now, but that will undoubtedly go out of style in a few years? If so, acknowledge that and don’t spend a fortune on it since you will have to replace it in a few years. It’s ok to buy trendy as long as you know you’ll be replacing it sooner rather than later.

2. How often will you use it?
Is it a sofa that you are going to be sitting on almost everyday? Are your pets and kids using it? Invest in the pieces that you plan on using A LOT. Go with a performance fabric. Be sure your upholstered pieces have quality foam and/or down filling, innerspring coils, etc. The more budget friendly pieces are made with cheaper materials, tend to not be as durable and will likely fall apart more quickly. That can be frustrating, because even lower quality furniture isn’t necessarily cheap. You really need to know what you’re buying.

3. How does it feel?
Do you love it? Does it feel just right? Are you thinking about it nonstop? We always say, if you love it, then get it! If you don’t love it… DON’T GET IT! There are a million choices out there, I promise!

4. It’s NOT all about high end brands!
Sometimes you really are just paying for the name and not for a higher quality. This can definitely be tricky without consulting a non biased expert. Always look for quality. Some brands may have great sofas but not so great dining tables. Interior designers have access to trade furniture which can be custom or are only sold through specific vendors, such as interior designers themselves. These items can be higher quality and even more economical when you consider how long quality items last.

5. Is it worth it?
With the previous 4 in mind, is the piece of furniture you’re contemplating worth it? Of course, the worth of a piece of furniture really varies from person to person. It depends on your personal taste, needs, budget and if you personally love it or not. Is it worth spending a bit more on items like a sofa that you use constantly? Probably. Is it worth spending an exorbitant amount on a guest bed that gets used once a year? Probably not.

  1. Time period, durability, reliability, touch and feel, all the points covered are good and it would be good to consider these before buying. Thanks for sharing.

  2. “Like People. It’s What on the Inside that Counts!”

This is so true! I think in this modern world of mass produced products and trends and social media, people lost sight of what makes a great furniture. The outside may look great but if it isn’t built correctly or used cheap materials from overseas than it is bound to have problems. But I guess some just want that 1 time instagram or TikTok photo and that’s enough for them to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars!
