What I love about Joanna Gaines

Why Fixer Upper is my favorite HGTV show

A while back I wrote a blog post about why HGTV isn’t real and all of my frustrations with it, as an interior designer.

But, Chip and Joanna Gaines, and their show Fixer Upper, are an exception.
Everyone seems to love Chip and Joanna, including me.
Everybody loves how accessible and down to earth they are.
But, I’m talking about why I, as an interior designer, love Chip, Joanna and Fixer Upper.

Here’s why –

  1. I love how Joanna is always casual. She’s not traipsing around in heels and a suit. She’s just comfy in her jeans, boots, t-shirt and baseball hat. I love that! I mean how the heck are we, as designers, supposed to walk around a construction site in heels and good clothes? We would be covered in sheetrock dust. As a designer, I struggle with what to wear to client meetings. I want to look professional, but let’s be practical here. I don’t want to ruin good clothes with paint, dust, and a random nail.
  1. I love that she’s not afraid to be goofy and be herself. Granted she doesn’t joke around as much as Chip, but she does let her personality shine through. As an interior designer, I struggle with this too. I try to act professional but sometimes my mouth goes before my brain. I’ve got to be me. 😉 So if you’re looking for a buttoned up, reserved interior designer, I’m not it. But, neither is Joanna, so maybe I’m ok.
  1. I love that her designs are comfortable and realistic. Her spaces aren’t stuffy and formal. Do people even want that anymore? I haven’t had a client yet that does. I see schmancy (that is a word), over designed rooms by other designers and I think, who wants that? So, I guess if you’re looking for that then I’m not your designer either. Again, neither is Joanna, so maybe I’m ok.
  1. I love her relationship with Chip. I love that they work together, on TV and off, and they’re still in love and having fun together. They haven’t let fame go to their head and change them. They just love each other and their family. That’s it. You have to love their relationship when you watch the show. My husband and I dream of flipping a house someday. I only hope that we enjoy working together ½ as much as Chip and Joanna do!
  1. I love that she’s there, on site, decorating. I love that they do show that she has a team with her. She has people unloading the truck and moving the furniture. She has people hanging art for her. And, unlike other HGTV designers, she’s not afraid to show that. Sometimes it takes a village.
  1. Lastly, I love that she drives the truck. It’s such a small thing but you know you have a secure husband when he lets you drive. That’s all I’m going to say about that. 😉

So if you’re going to watch HGTV, I suggest watching Fixer Upper.
No, the homeowners don’t get to keep all the furniture and accessories. That’s not included in the budget.
And, no they may not really look at all the houses.
But, Joanna is a real interior designer. She’s making all of us look good, which is not the norm on HGTV.
So, thank you Chip and Joanna Gaines!
This interior designer loves watching your down to earth show!
