6 Ways to Update Your Dated Kitchen

There are inexpensive ways to update your dated kitchen and there are less inexpensive ways to give your kitchen an update.

If you’re looking for a frugal way to refresh your kitchen, here are two ways to do it.

Inexpensive kitchen update #1 – change out the hardware.
You can find fun, new hardware options at your local hardware store or online.
I usually use knobs for cabinet doors and pulls for the drawers.
I think it’s more user-friendly this way.
But, if you’re older or have any type of arthritis or fine motor issues, using pulls on everything is probably a better option.

Inexpensive kitchen update #2 – paint

You can paint your cabinets!
Make sure you do your research and follow all of the necessary prep, like sanding, priming, etc. so that all of your hard work lasts.
You can go with white, but you could also have some fun and paint your cabinets gray, cobalt blue or even orange, whatever your favorite color is.
Why not? Like I always say – it’s only paint!

If you’re ready for a renovation and you’re not sure what you should choose as far as cabinetry, countertops, and backsplash then here are some trends that I’m loving right now.

Don’t get scared just because I used the word trends!
These are things trending right now, but they’ll also be around for a while.

Kitchen Trend #1 –Gray
We’re still seeing gray everywhere. It’s really neutral.
You can go with gray cabinetry and use classic marble subway tile for your backsplash and a marble look quartz for your countertops.
SO PRETTY!
These gray cabinets were spotted on HGTV.com

Kitchen Trend #2 – Painted Cabinetry

Gone are the days of oak cabinets with all that oaky grain showing through the stain.
My clients are tending to choose painted cabinetry more.
I even just did the kitchen below with really pretty gray/green cabinets.

Kitchen Trend #3 – Two different cabinet finishes

I just did the kitchen below with a dark island with a light quartz and a cream colored cabinet on the surround with a dark quartz.
It adds some interest, and fun, to this kitchen.

I have a fellow designer friend who is designing a kitchen right now with black bottom cabinets and white upper cabinets. I can’t wait to see her pictures of that.

Kitchen Trend #4 – Subway tile
While subway tile is trendy right now it’s not really a trend, per se.
Subway tile has been around forever and, to me, is a classic.
It goes great with any type of countertop.
And, it can morph into any style, from traditional to contemporary.
