What NOT to Splurge on For Your Home

You Can Decorate on a Budget

There are plenty of things you’re going to need to splurge on when you decorate your home, like quality cabinets and a great mattress.
But, you don’t need to splurge on these things.

Never splurge on –

Trendy Items
When it comes to the larger items for your home, like your large pieces of furniture, you want to stay neutral, veer away from trendy colors and styles that’ll be over with next year.
This one might seem like a no brainer but when you’re in the furniture store and the salesman is talking you into the beautiful teal sofa you might forget.
Stick with a neutral sofa and add some fun with trendy throw pillows, and maybe a side table, that can be replaced pretty inexpensively.

That brings me to the next item to never splurge on –

Throw Pillows –
You can find gorgeous, down and silk throw pillows for upwards of $200 a piece.
But WHY the heck would you spend so much money on something your husband is going to bunch up and stick under his head while watching football?
You can find beautiful and inexpensive throw pillows all over the place nowadays. HomeGoods alone has at least 2 aisles of them. Pier 1 has a whole wall of them. Even the Christmas Tree Shop and Job Lot have some pretty options.
Plus, if you don’t spend a ton of money on them, you can swap them out with the season.

Next, please don’t spend your whole paycheck on –

Table Lamps –
Lamps are such a fun way to add personality and quirk to a space. You don’t have to spend $500 on a lamp.
Again, HomeGoods has aisles of them, as does Pier 1. Wayfair has a ton of fun lamps to choose from, with free shipping.
Lamps need to give great light and act as an accessory for your space.
That’s it.
They don’t have to be a family heirloom. When was the last time you added a lamp to your will? No need. Grab a fun one that gives off the right amount of light while telling people something about your personality when they see it in your space.

Lastly, people always stress out about accessorizing their home.
You don’t have to spend a ton of money on –

Accessories –
The purpose of accessories in your home is to make it feel less like a house and more like your home, to warm it up and add some personality.
Yes, millionaires can spend, well, millions on rare artifacts for their home. They can send their designer to Paris to choose just the right items.
But, do you have to? NO
You can take a stroll through any furniture store and check out the accessories that are for sale.
Walk through.
Look at the accessories.
If you see on that pops out to you, one that says “Hi there, don’t you just love me?”
Then that’s the one for you.
I always tell my clients that there are gazillions of accessories to choose from out there in the world.
It’s not about how much they cost.
It’s about choosing items that are ‘you’ and things that tell your story.
Choose only accessories that you love.

That said, you can find things that you love at inexpensive stores, flea markets, yard sales, wherever.
Just make sure that it’s something that is ‘you’ and something you love.
